*** ABOUT THE STONES ***
AGATE: It's most noticeable properties overall are balancing yin/yang energy, courage, protection, healing, and calming. Historically it was placed in water for cooking or drinking to dispel sickness. Agate enhances creativity and strengthens the intellect, making it a beneficial stone for both students and artists. It is also known as a good luck stone. As a stone of harmony, one of the things agate does is balance yin/yang energy. Agate increases energy. However, because it is a grounding stone, it does not increase energy at all times, but rather enables bursts of energy as needed. In this way, agate is a conservation stone, and enhances longevity. Agate is a very protective stone. It is especially protective for children, and makes an excellent stone for children's amulets, medicine bags, jewelry, or just to carry around in a pocket. Agates are said to be especially useful for protecting children from falling. Agate is also used to protect against harmful spirits. Emotionally, agate gives courage, emotional strength, self-confidence, and dispels fears. It can also lessen feelings of envy by grounding the emotions. In the same way, it assists with acceptance of all things. It can be very beneficial for self-examination as well as examination of the circumstances one finds oneself in. These qualities make agate superior for easing anxiety and stress.
MOSS AGATE: is sometimes called the "gardener's stone" due to its mystical properties of helping ensure a full crop. In addition to a full crop, moss agate is said to bring general abundance, success, and prosperity. It is also said to help one gain peace with extreme or excessive duties in life and brings self-confidence and higher self-esteem. Moss agate is also said to be a metaphysically protective stone, as are all agates.
***WHAT IS A MALA***
Mala beads date back thousands of years. Traditionally Mala Beads are made up of 108 beads and have been used in prayer and meditation, but don't be intimidated by that. Anyone can wear Mala Beads whether you meditate or not. Many people are drawn to them for the believed healing properties of the gemstones used. Others are drawn to them because they are just beautiful pieces of jewelry.
You can wear them around your wrist, your neck, hang them at your altar, or meditate on them.
There are many different explanations for why 108 is a sacred number. Some say the number 108 represents one thing, nothing, and everything all at the same time. 1=one, 0= none, 8= infinity or all. Another is that It has been said that there are 108 energy lines connecting the heart, with one of them being directly linked to self actualization. Also 108 is a sacred number.
***HOW TO USE YOUR MALA***
If you choose to meditate on your mala, you will most likely use a mantra. A mantra is a word, sound, or phrase repeated to aid in your concentration. It can be as simple as the word "happiness" something you are thankful for, or a sanskrit phrase such as "Om Namah Shivaya" which means “I bow to that which I am becoming”. In the context of this chant, Shiva represents the inner reality…the truest nature of ourselves.
To count your mantras, hold your mala in your hand and turn each bead with your thumb and middle finger. (The index finger is believed to represent 'ego' and is not recommended to turn the beads.)
Going all the way around your mala, you will eventually reach the guru bead — the bead that dangles from the mala. This signals a time for reflection. You can reflect on your meditation practice, give thanks to your mantra, honor your guru — or show yourself a moment of gratitude for slowing down to meditate. Never continue over the guru bead. Instead, turn around and continue in the opposite direction.
Our mala beads have 108, as that's a very traditional and sacred number. They are also hand-knotted gemstone to help aid in the practice of japa meditation.
Meditation is a practice, as is self love.
